Do not buy foldable phones, the foldable screens are not ready for every day use.

The new 2nd generation of foldable devices is hitting the stores, so i want to warn people not to buy them. Why not? Well here is the is the short explanation:

And if you think the new “thin glass foldable” screens are better, than watch jerryrigeverything on youtube, testing the Galaxy Z Flip with the “thin glass technology”. Or believe me when i say: They are not!

Here is the long version, if you want to know more about my story:

I wish i have listened to the advice online when the first foldable phones came out. Reviewers generally did a good job and explained that it’s experimental and has risks, but some of them got caught up in the hype, and i leaned towards these tech reviewers, who of course turned out to actually never use the device for longer than a few days in the first place.

But even at this point, i never thought that i will end up in such as mess, as what i got into, after buying a Samsung Galaxy Fold. I not only suffered the risks of an experimental device, but also lost the loyalty towards a brand i loved in the past. I believe that Samsung Galaxy Fold is a horrible device and Samsung service has behaved unethically and unlawful with me.

First of all i would like to make it clear that since about 10 years I’m a Samsung fan. I started at one of the first Galaxy phones to use the brand, i also had an iPhone, but i immediately went back to Samsung. I said many times that Samsung makes better products and cheaper, i praised the brand when the conversation was about tech. I always bought devices in the mindset that i if i can buy from Samsung, i will buy that first and other brands only if Samsung has no products in that category. Since The Galaxy S4 i had all the galaxy flagship devices. Today when writing this, i have a Samsung Galaxy S8+, S9+, S10+, Fold… I have a Samsung Laptop, a Samsung Fridge, an old-school Samsung Plazma TV, a new Samsung LED TV, a Samsung BlueRay player, 5.1 sound system, about 4 Samsung wireless chargers, and even a Samsung washing machine… So in short, I’m convinced that I’m a Samsung fan, a loyal customer. Or was, after this.

Because of this i expected Samsung to be kinder to me, which was naive, since it’s a multinational brand, who are focused on profit and nothing else.

I bought a Galaxy Fold on the 04th of February 2020. The device is meant for the market where i bought it. This is important for later. This means it’s from a legit source and not some weird online place, where it’s 20% cheaper, and you don’t know why. I bought it not directly from a Samsung store, because Samsung Experience store and other bigger retailers in that region had no stock just after a few days after launch. The price was almost  the same as in a Samsung Experience store. The device was brand new, never opened.

I found a paper inside the box while opening it, which claims that for one year Samsung will replace the inside screen, if it gets damaged, for fraction of the real cost of a screen repair. This made me feel more secure, because it’s a foldable screen, i had some concerns, but i was sure Samsung would not release a bad device, at such a price and would keep ther claim of fixing it. Ohh man, i was wrong in every point…

On the 9th of February (4 days after buying it) i put the device down on a table while holding with one hand, thumb on the screen and fingers on the back, like i would do with any device. My thumb has rotated and my nail has touched the screen while lowering the phone down towards the table. You can see a demonstration fo this in the video. I applied no pressure, i held my device gently like i would hold any other device. The screen immediately broke where my nail barely touched it, and on the screen a vertical and horizontal line changed colour.

At this point i found out this screen is not meant for actually using the phone on a daly basis, its so soft that anything with a little edge, like a nail, touches it even gently it brakes immediately. Even so that my nail never penetrated the screen.

So i had a device that i won’t be able to use every day, but it costs 2000 EUR. I decided to buy this device at such a high price because i had to buy a phone and a laptop at the same time, so I planned to have this device with me when traveling, no laptop, just one device. A 2 in 1 solution. This justified the price somewhat. Really great idea…

At this point an other type of issue started with the brand…

I brought the device into Samsung service. In the service, the first time i was in, they told me: “No problem the phone is meant for the local market you got it from, surely everything will be fine, they will fix it for the lower fee.” I gave them the device and the invoice.

Later they called me back, that they also need the warranty paper, so i have to go back again, a 2nd time, of course did not say when i was there, or before when i called them about my issue. I collected the paper and went back the 2nd time. Then some time later they called me and told me the date of the invoice and the date on the warranty paper was not the same. Naturally, it was one day off as the payment for the device and the collection of the device was not on the same day. Regardless of this explanation, i was told i need to get a warranty paper with the correct dates. So i went to the store i got the device from a 2nd time, then back to Samsung service for the 3rd time, with a warranty paper which has the same date as the invoice.

About 2 days pass, Samsung service calls me that i should go in for the device, they denied to fix it for the lower fee… So, I went in for the 4th time now, they told me the internal foldable screen fix service dose not fall under guarantee (which was offered on a paper inside the box). In reality it’s an extended service that Samsung offers, but because it’s an extended service, different terms apply than for a guarantee which is regulated by law. So they showed me a printed contract which says that this extended service applied only if i buy the phone is purchased from selected retailers. When they stopped the explanation i had a phone with all data deleted and an offered of a 700 EUR full price repair.

To access this screen protection contract (which you never sign and its digital, so it can be edited any time) you have to scan a QR code, on the paper in the box, then get to a website, then click a few times and there you have it. Nice job, hiding extremely important details.

At this point i realised that i have a device that is not going be used by me daily, since its to sensitive, and if i want to fix something that i won’t use, i have to pay 700 EUR more on top of the 2000 EUR i payed already.

As you can imagine i have not accepted the offer and tried for months to find s

As you can imagine i have not accepted the offer and tried for months to find someone in Samsung who could help me. You can guess how successfully this was. I wrote to many different Samsung mail addresses, explaining my situation. Samsung either responded slow, or not at all, or deflected the responsibility. I went to different smaller phone services, who claimed they have good connections with Samsung, but after 1-2 months everyone gave back the phone, still broken…

And the cherry on top is that the Galaxy Buds, that came in the box with the Fold, also broke after a few weeks. And Samsung said they won’t fix it, because it was a “present”, so no warranty applies. This sounds crazy, right?

So i would like to warn everyone, that i strongly believe the Galaxy Fold is not suited for everyday use. All the foldable screens are soft, no other foldable device with a soft screen from any brand should be safe. The inside screen is so soft, that even a slight incorrect touch will damage it. If someone dose not cut he’s nails perfectly, or have a manicure every week (this is funny, because later i found out this is what jerryrigeverything in he’s youtube video says about the Galaxy Fold), it can be enough to damage the screen so much that it makes the device unusable.

And i would like also warn everyone, that some times we forget, that these brands, are profit driven companies, who care about nothing, but how much money they make. They don’t warn you how bad their product could be, they falsely market “thin glass” and “extra screen protection” to make you believe it’s all fine. But as soon as you would cost them even a little bit of money, they simple let you go and offer no emphaty.

I hope this helps someone to not make the same mistake like i did.
